High Altar: Numidian
marble, onyx and alabaster altar with columns
of colored porphyry designed by Stanford
White. Mosaics on the altar front are of
the Agnus Dei, the Lamb, a symbol
of Christ, and of Sts. Peter and Paul;
on the sides, symbolic representations
of the four evangelists, John (eagle),
Luke (ox), Matthew (man) and Mark (lion).
Interior inscription is in Latin: “Thou
art a vessel of election, St. Paul the
Apostle.” The three gilded bronze
angels above the altar are by Frederick
MacMonnies of Saint-Gaudens’ studio.
